Bad cop comment on leahs Shane Cotton (black and white CLIMBING)

Sorry its late I couldnt find any posts to reply to and I had trouble posting a comment Hence why its like this

Maha bad cop reveiw
My first thought when I saw this painting "was a drunken blackboard that just threw up on itself"for a limited colour pallete I find suprisingly nausiating. The lettering "CLIMBING" seems out of place almost amatuerish a shamless attempt to give this safe ,lacking attempt at art a context albeit spelled out by the artist himself (no pun intended). To me its obvious why the artist signed his name quite largely on the painting Its more of a buy me for the name rather than the content.

Essay thing?

this image is from th 1989 film, Harlem nights. The image portrays "fear" where the shot is shown in close-up view simply portraying Eddie's emotions of "fear". TYhe shallow depth fo field also depicts that Edie is th subject matter. eddie creates an u imagery in this film where viweres have come to assosiate with th black community!

The Scornful Woman (Gertrude Schiele), Egon Schiele, 1910

Naked to the waist and wearing a huge hat, she looks at someone with scorn at her side. The caricatured expression, what would have been a fine society lady in a black hat has been transformed into a fish wife, scornful, yet vulnerable.

the placing on the paper and the shortening of the hat and figure it'self reminds me of Lautrec, as does the medium, but the painting is also equally parts a distortion of Klimt.

Shane Cotton - Climbing ( Good Cop / Bad cop)

The reason why this particular piece stood out to me was because of the text ' climbing'. I love text in art as it gives you something sure to start from when you are trying to understand an artist's point of view. For this piece Shane has used white acrylic paint on a background of black and the contrast of these two colours emphasises the 'tree' and the life inherent within it. The swirls, loops and curls of the branches ( all in different sizes and textures) portray movement and a sense of unrest & wildness. They also suggest that there is power in the 'living' and in growth. At the base of the tree is a hand stretching upwards which suggests that this tree is a metaphor for human life, growing, climbing & moving in many directions. There is a sense of simplicity and yet intensity in this picture - a lone tree but yet an intricate & complex one with a story to tell

Shane Cotton - Star Eater - COMMENT

(Is this ok?) I was supposed to be COMMENTING on the form of an image, but due to the lack of posts, I was wondering if I could create a post myself, and comment on the form, instead?

I was absent on the day of the trip to the galleries, so I had a look online, and the Michael Lett gallery grabbed my attention.

Comments

The image above (Star Eater, by Shane Cotton) almost reminds me of some artwork that I used to do at primary school. I'd apply colour with felt tips or paint to a blank piece of paper, covering the entire thing, leave it to dry, and then over the top I'd cover it in a layer of black pastel. Then, with my fingernails, a coin, or another object, I'd scratch out pictures and swirly patterns, that would result in creating a really interesting & unique image. His work reminds me of those childhood memories, which is partly why I enjoy this piece.

To me, this painting has childlike elements, with the swirling patterns & the flowing doodle-like appearance of the layout - yet despite the calculated fragmentation, many parts also cohere. An initial thought was that it also contained a Maori narrative, with the red/black/white colouring and the recognisable detailed designs (ones you'd see on Maori wood carvings) that are only seen with a close-eye. The glowing masses positioned against the darkened negative space reinforces this, and perhaps the suggestion of carved body parts. When at a distance from this painting, I can almost make out a face. The large object in the middle of the image being the nose, the two dark empty spaces at each side of it - the eyes, and the space underneath at the bottom of the image - the mouth, with a pattern that reminds me of jagged teeth.

This work definitely has some sort of symbolic or cultural coding. It holds a certain mystery that I cannot quite understand, and I like that.

Sexism vs Racism

In this urban Art form from Kenyon, its with in the eye of the behold. Its to test personal thoughs, to be human about the audiances jugdement in what they see based on the world scepticism and stereo typing. The simplist forms leaves the viewers mind to fill the gap, that it is not about the work and what it intlaes but rather then its ability to intercept a more reform answer to the unkown word at the end of his Question/phrase.

Gallery visit: Shane Cotton, good cop

"Theory of drifting"

Out of all the work viewed from the galleries, I found that Shane Cottons' work was what stood out.

I think I liked Shane Cottons' work as the other galleries were very minimal with what was displayed and did not have much to them where as Cotton has more experience in this field and I have seen some previous works before. I think because Cotton is more proffesional in this field of work, he knows what to do. I like how the work is real dark but has some light trying to break through the clouds which changes the shade that the clouds are but the ship figure remains a deep black. This work looks free and "out of the box" rather than having all the sharp points and edges which I find is something that really works well within Cottons' practice. With regards to the ship figure, it almost appears to be a silhouette.

IMAGE FOR ESSAY MAHA - LET THEM EAT CRACK

This is an image of immense scale
I have included the cars and people to illustrate the magnitude
LET THEM EAT CRACK is a political statement by banksy about how coldly the corporates in America treat everyone they are symbolised by the rat with the neck tie holding the breifcase
the text has ben written in blood and there is blood on the hands of the rat (corporates). The rat also shelters himself with an umbrella which I beleive is a comment on the bush administration bailing out big corporations in the US effectively insulating them from the reccesion.
It is obvious that banksy has alot of contempt for corporate America.
the money falling out of the breifcase suggests greed. An interesting fact I found out is that rat is also an anagram for art.

My Essay - Image Content

Sarah Eating Corn - painted art work by Michael Smithers

The content here shows a love of painting people, because it is up close and detailed, with a fascination in the detail and the vibrancy of the colours.

Whilst there is a certain amount of accuracy that can be seen in the facial features - the eyes, nose and hands appear out of proportion to the rest of her body. It is almost as if it is his way of drawing attention to what she is doing by accentuating her frown, squinted eyes and flaring nostrils. Its like it is his way of showing how she feels eating the corn, and how much she is enjoying that way of eating the corn by holding it in her hands.

And strangely enough with the amount of detail in the hair strands, corn pieces, and shading on her top, yet there is no back ground at all, which tells me his prime focus is her and what she is doing.

GALLERY VISIT - "Good Cop"

My favourite art work today was in the Art Space stairwell which was a quiet, contemplative mural done by Jeena Shin.  I liked how the not so glamorous stairwell was made into a kaleidoscope of varying shades of white.  The domination of shape and colour changed depending on what angle you viewed them from, this also changed with the amount of light falling on the wall.  The shapes were geometric with a hard edge and seemed to be gently floating or falling down the walls.  They were layered which also gave a 3-D effect.  To me it was talking about visible and invisible - a little similar to our studio topic - presence and absence.

Image Content : Trip Fontaine, from "The Virgin Suicides" (Film)

There is a tinge of sadness and defeat in this image, as if he were expecting something, but it hasn't worked out to his advantage, he also comes across as vulnerable and misunderstood. I guess it can be seen as a bittersweet moment - he may think he has everything, but the best things in life can't always be handed to him on a silver platter.

TONY MONTANA

Al Pacino as Tony Montana in the film, "Scarface" directed by "Brian De Palma".

This image reveals the character of "Tony Montana" as a wealthy man, however the image also reveals his lust for power. Brian De Palma also expresses the idea that "you should never get high on your own supply" (quote from Brian De Palma).
