TONY MONTANA

Al Pacino as Tony Montana in the film, "Scarface" directed by "Brian De Palma".

This image reveals the character of "Tony Montana" as a wealthy man, however the image also reveals his lust for power. Brian De Palma also expresses the idea that "you should never get high on your own supply" (quote from Brian De Palma).

  1. some things i see in this film stil: the off centre composition is unbalanced and chaotic. the position of his arm connects him to the cocaine, long sighted focus (not sure if it's the correct term) shows him reseeding into the picture frame. because your studying a director i think it would be useful for you to research a film term called "mise en scene".

which pretty much means everything that goes into the composition of the shot, including the composition itself: framing, movement of the camera and characters, lighting, set design and general visual environment, even sound as it helps elaborate the composition.

and not taking anything in the scene for granted. the director put the telephone in the shot for a reason, the type of phone tells us about the time period and the status of the man etc...

here's a short reading about mise-en-scene i think will help you

  3. Joanne,
your observations of the form are quite insightful, it is good to hear a student break down an image and utilize "formal" language. (It would have been great to see you link your breakdown directly to Ian's observations.) Your suggestion for Ian to research mise-en-scene is potentially a good resource that Ian could use when writing his essay.
